The articulated, pseudo-3D Toot characters as redesigned by artist/animator Sean King for Tootsville IV.

Redux[edit]

The current game's Diorama 3D system is using Master Toot as well, but re-rigged for that system. Builder:Conversion of Legacy SWF has the progress of the adaptation.

History[edit]

In earlier versions of Tootsville, the Quad and Biped characters were all individually made for each of the Basic 8 patterns. By Tootsville III, there were some patterns and clothes for Biped characters (then, limited to VIT players), but the quads remained Basic 8 only.

Master Toots (both Quad and Biped) were made up of multiple, individually articulated body parts (head, body, arms, legs) that were layered together with the clothes and patterns. Each layer was hand-drawn in each of the 8 possible “facing” directions, and separate animation commands rotated and moved each limb. This allowed clothes and patterns to be designed without having to put in individual animation frames for each possible direction, and massively decreased the amount of work needed to create new artwork in the game.

It also enabled the 3D game world, although very little in Tootsville IV took advantage of this “3D-ness.”
